Duke Medicine advances the health and well-being of the people they serve through integrated, innovative, and compassionate care. To achieve their goals, Tsoi/Kobus & Associates took a hospitality customer service approach while incorporating the principals of Evidence Base Design. The new seven-story Cancer Center on the Duke University Medical Center campus will create spaces that allow for privacy, rejuvenation, choice, communication, and collaboration for an overall humanistic experience to health care.
- A welcoming, healing environment was created to focus on comfort and convenience for the patient and family.
- Image motifs found in the existing architecture of the campus fostered a consistent approach to the design solutions and created a unique identity.
- An improved entry experience, consolidation of the clinical services, and flexible layouts provide for future expansion.
- Multi-disciplinary, “no ownership” model of shared clinical modules.
- Efficient systems, high-performance envelope and shading strategies combine to achieve a reduction in energy use exceeding 20%.
- Interior design elements represent a strong commitment to healthy environments through the selection of non-toxic, low-VOC and PVC-free materials.
- Numerous connections to the outdoors including a landscaped healing garden located near the infusion center provide areas of respite for staff and families.
